Visit to the National Institute of Cardiology, Mexico City

In a few weeks, I will be visiting the National Institute of Cardiology Ignacio Chavez in Mexico City where they have the magnificent murals by Diego Rivera regarding the history of cardiology.  I will be going with my mentor and electrocardiologist collaborator David Newman MD, and we will be meeting the electrocardiologist Manlio Marquez MD, who will be introducing us to the Institute.  This is of particular interest to me, because of my Amulet Project,  a body of work which incorporates biomedical devices used in electrophysiology procedures.  I am interested in the history of electrocardiology, and it was a Mexican cardiologist, Jesus Alanis’, working at his laboratory at the Institute in the 1950’s, who made significant discoveries about the heart’s electrical system. Dr. Newman has taught about the history of electrophysiology and is also looking forward to meeting Dr. Marquez, who has written extensively about cardiologist Jesus Alanis and his research. It will be an honor to visit this institute with Dr. Newman and to meet Dr. Marquez.
