The Amulet Project
the heart of the matter
My present series, The Amulet Project, continues my work related to the human heart and combines elements which speak of spirit and matter, past and present, science and art. Amulets have been used since ancient times as objects of healing or protection against disease or ill fates. They were meant to contain the spiritual, i.e., invisible powers of the universe. With the scientific pursuits of medicine in the Western world, there were discoveries regarding how the body actually functioned, and healing then required physical, material . . . medical intervention. The Amulets that I am creating contain the intention of healing, but they also incorporate biomedical devices which have addressed the malfunctions in cardiac electrical conduction systems. I consider the Amulets to be inspirational, since they combine spiritual and material elements which we call upon for our well being. However, many of the biomedical devices that I incorporate have been explanted, that is, were available only after the person passed away. Therefore, the Amulets also speak of impermanence and the preciousness of our existence. This project is an extension of my series Transmission (Torsos and Amulets), the works of which were included in my Embodiments exhibition at La Specola Museum in Florence, Italy: https://www.janicegordon.net/museo-exhibition . The Amulet Project is presently in process and will become part of a larger series. To see recent Amulets, click here.
