Material Witness
studio objects/flesh
My work in life and in the studio has been to challenge the traditional dualisms of spirit and matter, art and science, infinite and finite. In my art, I have attempted to reconcile those differences. Material Witness addresses the "body and the world." In my studio, I have a large collection of interesting objects: stones, shells, feathers, eggs and much more. Ah, the consolation of objects. I have loved to look at them, handle them, sort them, incorporate them in my work . . . and photograph them. It occurred to me that my body too was a material object, and I began to juxtapose my studio objects with the skin. These simultaneities of "body and world" are captured and gathered together under the project name: Material Witness in which I . . . the camera . . . you, . . . we . . . witness the materiality of both.
